‘Shadows in the Water’ by Thomas Traherne

23 Dec

Gaurdian, this time printed the poem of metaphysical poet Thomas Traherne. Not much known because he did not published any of this poems. In this poem he talks about the other worlds, not in terms of heaven, but more near to worlds as describe in science fiction. For a person living in 17th century such resemblance in the description of the other worlds was quite interesting.

Beneath the water people drowned,
Yet with another heaven crowned,
In spacious regions seemed to go
As freely moving to and fro:
In bright and open space
I saw their very face;
Eyes, hands and feet they had like mine;
Another sun did with them shine. (Shadows in the Water, Thomas Traherne)
